Birth Control Q & A
What birth control options are available?
Austin Springs Women’s Health offers a range of birth control methods, including:
- Birth control pills
- Intrauterine devices (IUDs)
- Nexplanon® implants
- Diaphragms
- Tubal ligation (permanent option)
Your provider will help you choose a method that aligns with your needs, preferences, and any hormonal benefits you’re seeking.
What is an IUD?
An IUD is a small, T-shaped device inserted into the uterus to prevent fertilization. There are two main types:
- Hormonal IUDs (Mirena®, Kyleena, Liletta, Skyla®): Release progesterone to prevent sperm from reaching the egg and often reduce menstrual bleeding.
- Non-hormonal IUDs (e.g., Paragard®): Use copper to interfere with sperm movement and function.
IUDs provide 3–10 years of protection and can be inserted quickly and comfortably in-office.
What is Nexplanon®?
Nexplanon is a small, flexible contraceptive implant placed under the skin of the upper arm. It steadily releases hormones to prevent ovulation and offers protection for up to 3 years. It’s ideal for those who prefer a low-maintenance, long-term solution without daily pills.
What is sterilization?
Sterilization (tubal ligation) is a permanent method of contraception that involves sealing or blocking the fallopian tubes. At Austin Springs Women’s Health, this procedure can be performed using minimally invasive laparoscopy for a quicker recovery and minimal scarring.
